Washington County is home to Hamburg State Park, found just 10 miles north of Sandersville. The 250 acres are a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Your family can enjoy boating or fishing on the 225-acre lake, followed by a relaxing picnic at the park.

As if that wasn't enough, Lake Oconee and Lake Sinclair are located just a half an hour away adding to your chances of landing that record-sized bass.

Washington County is truly a sportsman's paradise! For those who like to hunt dove, turkey, and deer--are all abundant in the area.

If you prefer the greens of the fairway to the cool blues of the lakes, then you'll enjoy being a guest at the Twin City Country Club.

Of course, there are also excellent public golf courses located nearby.

Organized athletic programs bring the community together. Year-round programs are offered to all ages by the Washington County Recreation Department including baseball, soccer, basketball, softball and flag football. The department offers programs from gardening to swimming. You'll also find lighted basketball and tennis courts, playing fields, a playground and picnic area in Washington County.

Endless recreational opportunities aren't all that Washington County has to offer. Founded in 1784, Washington County has over a dozen historical sites on the National Registry of Historic Places. The communities are some of the few saved from General Sherman's fiery march to the sea during the Civil War. The "Old Jail," where the infamous Aaron Burr spent the night in 1807, is the oldest in Georgia.

Many of the turn-of-the-century residences and business structures were uniquely designed by Charles Edward Choate, the master architect. The largest concentration of his documented structures are in Washington County--over a dozen have been identified! The district was place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.

Residents of Washington County celebrate their heritage each year at the Kaolin Festival. Known as the "Kaolin Capital of the World," Washington County is proud of the solid foundation on which it is based.

People from all parts of the world gather to enjoy arts, crafts, antiques, music and food offered at this annual event during the second week of October. Joining friends and neighbors to commemorate the area's rich past and to celebrate the bright future are just a part of living in Washington County.

An act of the Georgia State Legislature made Sandersville's plates the official plates of Georgia in 1974. They commemorate the 200th anniversary of the founding of the state of Georgia by James Oglethorpe.

These beautiful and intriguing plates have been used at the Georgia Governors Mansion, in the White House, and by member of the royal family of England.

The plates are an original design by the late Annie Louise Irwin of Sandersville in 1933 and may be purchase from over 100 retail shops around the southeast. Manufactured by wedgewood of England exclusively for the Transylvania Club of Sandersville.
